Dariga Nazarbayeva was born in Temirtau in the Karaganda region of Kazakhstan. She studied at the Faculty of History of M. Lomonosov Moscow State University and in 1985 she graduated from Kazakh State University. In 1990, Dariga entered a PhD program of the MSU, in a year she defended her thesis on history, and seven years later she became a Doctor of Political Science.
Dariga started her professional activities in 1992 as the Vice President of “Bobek” Children’s Charity Fund.
In 1994, she became the Vice President of “Television and Radio of Kazakhstan” Corporation and headed “Khabar” National Television News Agency, where she worked till 2004 as the Director, General Director, President and Chair of the Agency’s Board of Directors.
In 2004, D. Nazarbayeva was elected Deputy of the Mazhilis of Parliament of the Republic of Kazakhstan of the 3rd convocation from “Asar” party, and was the leader of “Aimak” deputy group. In 2006, she became the Deputy Chair of “Otan” Republican Party, the member of its Political Council’s office.
From 2007 till 2008, Dariga headed the Foundation of the First President of the Republic of Kazakhstan. From January 2012 – deputy of the Mazhilis of the Parliament of the Republic of Kazakhstan of the 5th convocation, Chairperson of the Social and Cultural Development Committee. In April 2014, she was elected Vice Speaker of the Mazhilis. Being the member of the Political Council of “Nur Otan” Democratic People’s Party, she headed the party fraction in the lower house of Parliament.
In September 2015, by the Order of the President of the Republic of Kazakhstan, Dariga was named Deputy Prime Minister of the Republic of Kazakhstan, and in September 2016 –deputy of the Senate of Parliament of the Republic of Kazakhstan, where she was elected the Chairperson for International Affairs, Defense and Security.
Dariga Nazarbayeva is the initiator and co-founder and also permanent Chairperson of the Organizing Committee of the Eurasian Media Forum and Chairperson of the Executive Committee of the Congress of Kazakh Journalists. She is the leader of the Council of the Kazakhstan Youth Congress, boards of trustees of “Degdar” Humanitarian Foundation and “Asar-Bereke” Public Foundation.
Dariga has been awarded the orders of the Republic of Kazakhstan “Parasat” and “Barys of II category”, she is the Chevalier of the Order of Arts and Letters of France.
She is the author of a number of monographs, books and many publications. Speaks Kazakh, Russian, English and Italian.
