Saule Mektepbayeva is a well-known human rights defender, independent consultant, human rights expert.
She has extensive work experience in international organizations and state bodies of Kazakhstan. At different times, she has worked on projects for the World Bank, the United Nations Development Program, Soros Foundation-Kazakhstan, as the Regional Director of “Penal Reform International” organization in Central Asia, as well as the head of the expert department of the Human Rights Commissioner’s Office in the Republic of Kazakhstan. Saule is currently one of the leaders of the European Union’s project on improvement of criminal justice in Kazakhstan.
The theme of her thesis in Juridical Sciences was “Constitutional and legal limits of human rights restrictions”. She is the author of several articles on the problematic issues of human rights observance in Kazakhstan.
SauleMektepbaeva is a member of the Commission on Human Rights under the President of the Republic of Kazakhstan, Secretary of the Coordinating Council of the National Torture Prevention Mechanism and the Consultative Council of the General Prosecutor’s Office of the Republic of Kazakhstan.
